Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre

About

Discover the magic of the World’s No.1 Storyteller, Roald Dahl. Set in the village that Dahl lived and wrote in for 36 years, this great little Museum is packed with hands-on things to do. Pull a powerpose with Matilda, see Fantastic Mr Fox’s living room, peek into Roald Dahl’s Writing Hut, and dress up as your favourite characters.

There are always free craft activities on offer, and you can pick up a trail sheet at the ticket desk to help you explore. Look out for storytelling on selected weekend days and in the school holidays. You can also stretch your legs on one of our free family walks. These take you out of the Museum and into the local village and countryside that inspired some of Roald Dahl’s best loved stories, including Matilda and Fantastic Mr Fox. If you get peckish, bring a picnic and walk through the Wonka gates to enjoy it in our courtyard.

The best thing is that you can come back over and over again, there’s unlimited entry for 12 months with every ticket.
Little known facts:

1. The old petrol pumps opposite the Museum were the inspiration for Danny's Dad's garage in 'Danny the Champion of the World'. Find them and other places mentioned in the stories on the Museum's Village Trail.
2. The Museum's Wonka gates were donated by Warner Brothers. The original gates from the film set were too large, so they made us our very own scaled-down set!
3. The Museum is home to some peculiar items, including Roald Dahl's hip-bone and shavings from his spine, his RAF flying helmet and his odd Norwegian sandal, used by Quentin Blake as the model for the BFG's footwear.
4. The interior of Roald Dahl's Writing Hut was carefully moved to the Museum in 2012 from the original hut in the author's garden. It has been recreated exactly as he left it and holds almost 300 objects, including puzzles, handkerchiefs and human bones.
